We are proud to be celebrating our 20th Anniversary Year of the University of British Columbia Summer Music Institute! Since the summer of 1993, the two week-long programmes have offered students the opportunity to concentrate on their instruments or voice for up to six hours each day and to interact with UBC School of Music faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students, and other serious young musicians from across B.C. and around the world!
Programmes are offered in concert band, jazz band, and voice. Students can come as "daycampers" or choose to stay in the fully supervised dormitory with all meals provided. Lunch is provided for all students as part of tuition, and everyone receives an institute t-shirt, as well as a recording of their final concert. The students' days at the institute consist of rehearsals, master classes, sectional coachings, recreation and evening entertainment programmes.
Students may obtain private lessons from members of the UBC School of Music faculty, many of whom are members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, and successful jazz groups around town. Master classes are given by professional musicians and teachers. Sectional coachings are led by both professional musicians and higher level students of the UBC Music Program. Each week there is a faculty concert on the Tuesday afternoon and a student concert in one of UBC's three beautiful concert halls on the final day for each programme. Parents, friends and the general public are invited to both concerts in each week.
In addition to the intensive music making, the students have opportunities to enjoy various recreational activities and cultural centres on campus, including the Aquatic Centre, Museum of Anthropology, Art Gallery, gardens, bookstore, movies, and a weekly dance party. Once each week there is also an opportunity to participate in an evening off campus activity: Vancouver's world class Shakespeare festival, Bard on the Beach; or an improvised comedy show at Vancouver Theatre Sports.
Students who choose to stay on campus this year will be housed, fully supervised, in the Place Vanier Residence which is located a few minutes' walk from the School of Music. Parents of students from out of town please note that we will be happy to meet your students at the airport or bus station and transport them to UBC.
Each evening after dinner, students have the opportunity to perform a solo or small group piece in the musical "lottery", which will qualify them for a chance at a $100 and many other prizes.
By providing outstanding young musicians the opportunity to become familiar with UBC, the School of Music, and its faculty, we feel that we are making a sincere effort to bring the university and its programmes to our community.
We're happy to announce that we will again be welcoming students from the Pure Orchestral Centre in Hong Kong to participate in our programme:
